Overview

The Mt. Kailash – Manasarovar Tour offered by Ideal Nepal Tours and Travels is a spiritual and adventurous journey to one of the most sacred destinations in the world. Situated in the remote corners of western Tibet, Mount Kailash (6,638 m) is revered by four major religions—Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Bon—as the center of the universe. This 14-day pilgrimage combines scenic drives, spiritual exploration, cultural immersion, and challenging trekking, offering a transformative experience for seekers and adventurers alike.

Beginning in Kathmandu, the tour allows travelers to explore the rich cultural and spiritual tapestry of the city before venturing northward into Tibet via Kyirong. The route winds through serene landscapes—verdant valleys, high Himalayan passes, tranquil lakes, and ancient monasteries—before reaching the sacred Lake Manasarovar and the majestic Mt. Kailash. The 3-day Kora (circumambulation) of Mt. Kailash is the spiritual highlight of the journey, drawing thousands of pilgrims annually to walk around the mountain in devotion and reflection.

Best Time for Mt. Kailash Manasarovar Tour
The best time to embark on the Mt. Kailash – Manasarovar Tour is from May to mid-October, with the peak season being June to September. During these months, the weather across the Tibetan plateau is more stable and relatively mild, with daytime temperatures ranging from 10°C to 20°C. The skies are often clear, offering breathtaking views of Mt. Kailash and the surrounding Himalayan ranges.

Pilgrims and trekkers should avoid the harsh Tibetan winter, as temperatures can drop drastically and roads may be closed due to heavy snow. The summer season also coincides with several important religious festivals, such as Saga Dawa, celebrating the birth, enlightenment, and death of Lord Buddha. Witnessing rituals at Lake Manasarovar or sharing the trail with devoted pilgrims during this time adds a deep spiritual resonance to the journey.

Mt. Kailash Manasarovar Tour Difficulty
The Mt. Kailash – Manasarovar Tour is classified as a moderate to strenuous pilgrimage trek, primarily due to its high altitude and remote terrain. The maximum elevation reached during the trek is approximately 5,620 meters (18,438 ft) at Dolma La Pass, which can cause altitude-related challenges such as headaches, fatigue, and shortness of breath. Proper acclimatization days, like the stopover in Saga, are built into the itinerary to help participants adjust gradually.

While the tour doesn’t require advanced trekking skills or technical climbing, a good level of physical fitness and mental preparation is essential. The 3-day Kora trek around Mt. Kailash involves walking about 52 kilometers, often on rocky, uneven trails and at high altitudes. Ideal Nepal Tours and Travels ensures participants are supported with experienced guides, oxygen cylinders, and emergency backup to make the journey as safe and comfortable as possible.

(Chinese local time.) Initially, it is an uphill trek from Deraphuk but after walking for an hour or so, the trail turns into a mild ascend. Half of the trail passes through an elevation of 4900 m./16,000 ft. or above, so one Might feel mild breathlessness or headache. However, we should try to keep our Pace slow & steady. Please do not forget to carry a water bottle, down jacket, raincoat, and some dry fruits & chocolates with you. Everybody has a different pace of walking. People might not be around when you need them. So, you have to be self-dependent on Basic things. After making an uphill trek for about 4 hours or so, we will reach a high pass where we will find Tibetan prayer flags fluttering. This is called ‘Dolma La passes (5800 m.). This is the highest point that we will be crossing over during this divine Trip. After making a gentle descent from the pass, we will find ourselves near a tiny glacial lake. This is ‘GauriKund’. From Gaurikunda, the trail leads us rapidly down through an area full of boulders and loose pebbles. Going down can be more demanding compared to coming up. In case you have to hire a horse, you need to come down off the horse. After trekking down for another one and a half hours or so from Gauri Kunda, we will eventually reach the valley floor. From this point on, the trail is flat & easy. It is another 2 hours of easy walk to reach Zutulphuk from here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mount Kailash is considered one of the most sacred mountains in the world. It is revered by Hindus as the abode of Lord Shiva, by Buddhists as the home of Demchok, by Jains as the site where Rishabhadeva attained liberation, and by Bon followers as the seat of spiritual power. Lake Manasarovar, located near the base of Mt. Kailash, is believed to cleanse the soul of sins and is often the site of ritual bathing and spiritual ceremonies. The region is not only visually stunning but deeply symbolic, making it a once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimage.

The tour is moderately to strenuously challenging due to the high altitude and the trekking portion, especially the 3-day Kora (circumambulation) of Mt. Kailash, which covers approximately 52 kilometers. The trek includes steep ascents and descents, with the highest point being Dolma La Pass (5,620 meters). While previous trekking experience is helpful, it’s not mandatory. However, participants must be in good physical health. Ideal Nepal Tours and Travels designs the itinerary to include sufficient acclimatization and provides experienced guides to assist every step of the way.

Yes, all travelers must obtain a Chinese Group Visa and Tibet Travel Permit, along with additional permits for the Kailash region. Ideal Nepal Tours and Travels handles the entire visa and permit process on behalf of the traveler. Indian nationals and other foreign passport holders may have slightly different procedures, which the company will assist with in detail. It’s recommended that passports be valid for at least six months beyond the tour date.

In Kathmandu and major towns like Saga or Kyirong, you will stay in comfortable 3-star category hotels or guesthouses. In remote areas such as Darchen and during the trek, accommodations are more basic—mostly guesthouses or shared dormitories with limited facilities. Meals provided during the tour include vegetarian Indian, Nepali, and Tibetan dishes. Ideal Nepal Tours and Travels ensures hygienic food options and safe drinking water throughout the journey.

The best season is from May to mid-October, with June to September offering the most favorable weather conditions. During this time, the roads are accessible, temperatures are relatively moderate, and the skies are clear, providing spectacular views of the mountains. This period also includes Saga Dawa Festival, a spiritually significant event for Buddhists, making it a popular time for pilgrims.

Due to the high elevation, altitude sickness is a real concern. To minimize the risk, Ideal Nepal Tours and Travels includes acclimatization days in the itinerary, particularly at Saga before heading higher. The team carries oxygen cylinders and first-aid kits, and guides are trained to recognize and respond to symptoms of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness). Participants are also encouraged to consult with their doctors before the trip and may carry medications like Diamox if prescribed.

Yes, but with caution. The tour is suitable for those who are in good physical condition and can handle high altitude trekking. Older participants or those with pre-existing health conditions should undergo a full medical check-up before booking the tour. Ideal Nepal Tours and Travels has led pilgrims of various ages, including seniors, but always prioritizes safety and may advise against participation if health risks are significant.

Packing appropriately is key to a successful Kailash–Manasarovar Yatra. Essential items include warm clothing, sturdy trekking boots, sunglasses, a wide-brim hat, lip balm, personal medication, and a down jacket or sleeping bag (especially for the high-altitude nights). A complete packing checklist will be provided by Ideal Nepal Tours and Travels upon confirmation of the booking, tailored to seasonal requirements.

Booking the Mt. Kailash–Manasarovar Tour can be done directly through Ideal Nepal Tours and Travels’ official website, by phone, or by email. Once you confirm your interest, a deposit is required to secure your spot, and the remaining balance is payable before the tour departure. The team will provide all necessary documents, visa instructions, and travel guidelines upon registration.

With over 20 years of experience, Ideal Nepal Tours and Travels is a trusted name in spiritual and adventure travel. The company offers personalized service, expert local guides, transparent pricing, and 24/7 support throughout the tour.
