Highlights

Overview

Mount Manaslu, the eighth-highest peak in the world at 8,163 meters (26,781 feet), towers over the rugged terrain of the Gorkha District in north-central Nepal. Revered as the "Mountain of the Spirit," Manaslu is part of the Mansiri Himal range of the Nepalese Himalayas. Its name originates from the Sanskrit word manasa, meaning "intellect" or "soul," reflecting the deep spiritual significance it holds for the local communities and trekkers alike. The mountain was first successfully climbed in 1956 by a Japanese expedition, and it continues to draw adventurers who seek less crowded but equally rewarding Himalayan experiences.

The area surrounding Manaslu is a restricted region, which has helped preserve its natural and cultural integrity. Unlike the more commercialized trekking routes such as Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Circuit, Manaslu offers a more authentic and remote experience. Trekkers are rewarded with sweeping alpine vistas, pristine glaciers, and dramatic river gorges, as well as a chance to witness the unique blend of Tibetan and Nepalese culture that thrives in this secluded region.

Manaslu Circuit Trek
The Manaslu Circuit Trek is a high-altitude journey that offers one of the most spectacular and enriching trekking experiences in Nepal. This 14–18 day trek circumnavigates Mount Manaslu, beginning in the lush foothills of Soti Khola and ascending to the snow-covered pass of Larkya La at 5,160 meters (16,929 feet). This trek is not only a physical challenge but also a cultural odyssey, passing through remote villages inhabited by ethnic groups such as the Nubri and Tsum people, who have preserved their traditions for centuries.

One of the defining features of the Manaslu Circuit Trek is its diversity—both in landscapes and cultural interactions. From subtropical forests and terraced fields to alpine meadows and glacial valleys, the scenery is ever-changing and breathtaking. Along the trail, trekkers encounter ancient monasteries, mani walls, and chortens that speak to the region’s deep-rooted Tibetan Buddhist heritage. The final ascent to Larkya La Pass is a test of endurance, but the panoramic views of Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal, Kang Guru, and Annapurna II make it all worthwhile.

Major Places for Manaslu Circuit Trek
Several key locations make the Manaslu Circuit Trek a standout Himalayan adventure. The journey typically starts at Soti Khola, where trekkers are introduced to the verdant hills and thundering rivers of lower Manaslu. As you progress to Machha Khola, Jagat, and Philim, you’ll pass through terraced fields and quaint villages that offer a glimpse into the daily lives of the local people. Namrung and Lho are important cultural stops, home to traditional Tibetan-style homes and ornate monasteries like Ribung Gompa.

Further along, Samagaun is a major highlight, situated beneath the majestic face of Mount Manaslu. This village is not only a place for rest and acclimatization but also a cultural treasure trove with its ancient gompas and proximity to Manaslu Base Camp and Birendra Tal, a glacial lake. Samdo, the last village before the Larkya La ascent, is a remote outpost close to the Tibetan border, offering a rare window into trans-Himalayan trade and culture. After crossing the breathtaking Larkya La Pass, the trail descends into the serene valley of Bimthang and eventually rejoins the Annapurna Circuit route near Dharapani, bringing the trek to a satisfying and scenic conclusion.
